Wild Strawberry - Fragaria virginiana
-
Wild Strawberry, Fragaria virginiana, is a native, evergreen, ground-hugging plant forming from a fibrous, perennial root system. Found in patches in fields and dry clearings, this species produces the finest, sweetest, wild strawberry appearing in early summer. Plants bear hairy leaf petioles, up to 6″ long, each with a single trifoliate leaf. The hairy flower stalk gives rise to a loose cluster of small, five-petaled flowers followed by tasty, wild strawberries. Tolerant of full sun to part shade, it prefers dry soils. Berries and blooms are attractive to wildlife and butterflies, and this species serves as the larval host plant for the Gray Hairstreak.
