Monarda punctata, Spotted Bee Balm, is easily grown in average, dry to medium moisture, well-drained soils in full sun to part shade. The ‘Bee Bop’ cultivar is a compact, early-flowering selection of spotted beebalm that features showy blooms and fragrant foliage. Mature clumps will reach up to 1.5′ tall and spread to fill a similar area. Though not considered aggressive, this species will spread by runners to form large clumps. A member of the mint family, it grows with spotted two lipped yellow flowers. Each cluster of flowers is subtended by showy pink leaf bracts. The 3″ long toothed leaves can be used as a tea substitute and has a long summer blooming period. Provide good air circulation to prevent powdery mildew. Bee Balm is highly attractive to butterflies.
