Prairie Trillium - Trillium recurvatum
-
Despite its name, Prairie Trillium, or Trillium recurvatum, prefers to grow in moist deciduous woods in part to dappled shade but will tolerate more sun exposure than similar woodland plants. Prairie Trillium emerges in the spring with large green mottled leaves followed by blood-red flowers. The plant flowers in mid to late spring for three to four weeks. A woodland ephemeral, prairie trillium goes dormant in the summer and does not return until the following spring. Each plant spreads slowly through rhizomes. Plant alongside other woodland plants such as shrub yellowroot or ferns.
