Tall Thimbleweed, Anemone virginiana, is a native, spring-blooming anemone that typically occurs in rocky or dry open woods and wooded slopes. This herbaceous, perennial prefers moist, humusy soil in full sun to part shade, though it can tolerate full shade and dry rocky soils. Showy, one inch diameter white blossoms appear above erect stems that reach 2 – 3″ in height. The large flowers give way to a slightly elongated center and thimble-shaped seed head that remain into winter, giving the plant its common name and providing forage for songbirds. This is an excellent spring flower for shaded or woodland gardens.
