Selfheal, Prunella vulgaris, is a low-growing, perennial wildflower that grows throughout North America, from Florida to Alaska. The USDA classifies it as a native plant, but there is some debate as to whether it is native or introduced. Selfheal grows best in moist soils in full sun to part shade. Plants reach up to 3 feet tall when in flower. Flowering occurs in spring, when cylindrical shaped spikes covered in small purple flowers form. Flowers attract bees and butterflies. Plants spread by seeds and stolons and can become weedy in the right environment. Also has a history of medicinal use.
