Tips from a Pro
For plants like Echinacea and Solidago, leave the seed heads up through winter. Not only do they add winter interest, but they also provide food for birds and shelter for beneficial insects. If needed, trim back dead or diseased plant material after the first frost to clean up the garden, but don’t prune too aggressively, as the dead stems can provide natural insulation.
